Wild Ginger
Asarum canadense
An attractive, low-growing colony ground cover suitable for shaded areas. Each plant bears a pair of large, velvety, heart-shaped leaves. Unlike many spring under-story plants, Wild Ginger will keep its foliage throughout the season. A dark red-purple solitary flower appears hidden under the leaves for a short period in early spring.
Native American's used Wild Ginger as a seasoning or to treat colds and fevers. European settlers used the root as a ginger substitute. The leaves may cause some skin irritation, so wear gloves.
